UK authorizes Pfizer coronavirus vaccine for emergency use

LONDON (AP) — Britain authorized a COVID-19 vaccine for use Wednesday, greenlighting the first shot backed up by rigorous scientific review. The first vaccinations are expected within days — a major step toward eventually ending the pandemic.

The go-ahead for the vaccine from American drugmaker Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech comes as the virus surges again in the United States and Europe, putting pressure on hospitals and forcing new rounds of restrictions that have devastated the global economy. Officials cautioned that several tough months still lie ahead, even in Britain, given the scale of the operation needed to vaccinate large swaths of the population.

US drug regulators gave emergency approval to a Covid-19 antibody therapy on Saturday and G20 nations pushed for global access to vaccines as the pandemic led to further closures in parts of the world.

With cases surpassing 12 million in the United States, the highest in the world, many Americans were nonetheless heading to airports to travel for next week’s Thanksgiving holiday despite health officials’ warnings to stay home.

Some US states were imposing new restrictions, including California, where a 10 pm to 5 am curfew was taking effect.

Minister Anutin expects Thailand to have COVID-19 vaccine in 9 months

Thailand may have its own COVID-19 vaccine in the next nine months, if every stage of the development proceeds smoothly, according to the country’s Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Thursday.

The Minister, accompanied by Medical Science Department chief Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, Food and Drug Administration Deputy Secretary-General Dr. Supachoke Tangvivat and Dr. Nakorn Premsri, Director of the National Vaccine Institute, were briefed on the development of the DNA type vaccine by Mr. Vitoon Wongharnkul and Dr. Pham Hong Thai, joint managing directors of Bionate Asia.
